What is a telogen effluvium?

Efluvio telógeno

Telogen effluvium is the most common cause of diffuse hair loss. It consists of a more or less sudden loss of abundant mature hair, usually 3-4 months after a stressful event. The most common triggers are pregnancy, weight loss, surgery, serious illness, or events with a significant psychological impact.

While it is normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day, during telogen effluvium, the loss is greater.

Caida de pelo

Normally, up to 100 hairs are lost per day.

Despite the dramatic appearance, the good news is that hair lost as a result of telogen effluvium recovers over the months following the episode. No specific treatment is necessary. Time simply heals it.

It is important to differentiate telogen effluvium from other types of diseases that cause hair loss, such as androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, nutritional deficiencies, or systemic diseases, so it may be necessary to consult a dermatologist.
