Viral warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It is spread through direct contact with skin infected with the virus. There are more than 150 types of HPV, which have different “preferences” in terms of the location of the body they affect. For example, type 1 mainly infects the soles of the feet (causing what are known as “plantar warts”), while types 6 and 11 most commonly affect the anogenital area (causing ‘condylomas’ or “genital warts”). Depending on where they appear, they can vary in appearance and size.
Two-thirds of viral warts disappear spontaneously within two years, although they are usually treated to remove them and prevent them from spreading to other areas.

Viral warts are different from fibromas or skin tags.
